Is it possible to learn the how to play the Chapman Stick without first learning the bass or guitar first?

I'm interested in learning how to play the Chapman Stick. Do I need to take guitar or bass lessons first, or can I start from scratch with the Stick?

  1. The technique for playing the stick is very different from guitar and bass. I tried learning the Stick a few years ago, and found it very difficult to "de-program" myself from what I was used to playing on guitar.

So…you might actually be better off starting off on the Stick if that’s what you want to play. It’s a wonderful instrument.

    Good luck.
