For guitar: When do you use picking and when do you use tapping?

A Happy-Tappy Question --
(See 'comments' link for Answers)

Hi i'm a beginner at electric guitar and this question have bothered me for a long time. When do you use picking, and when do you use tapping? If you can tap and still sound like picking, why do you need to pick the guitar then? I don't hear any difference in sound when you pick and tap. What difference is there to pick the guitar and tap the guitar fretboard?

  1. You pick almost all the time.

Tapping is something a bit different, it’s like hammer on/pull off but with the right hand as well, like your left hand is on the 4th fret and 7th, you can use your right hand to tap the string on a lower fret, like the 12th.
